Woke up to a Muslim call to worship…

The window of our hotel room was open because there was no air conditioning…so all night long we could hear the sounds of the street.

Cars and scooters…people walking the streets late at night…dogs barking. That’s what we heard throughout the night.

My alarm clock was set for 6:45 because we were going to leave for church a little before 9:00. But I woke up earlier than that when the sounds that were coming through the open window were no longer just the sounds of the street but the first Muslim call to prayer for the day.

If you have never heard one, I can tell you that it’s a little disquieting. Other-worldly.

Our first morning in Ethiopia, my alarm was not what woke me up. It was a Muslim call to prayer.

It woke me up…you might say it was a wake-up call.
